As the main stadium of Optics Valley International Tennis Center, the 15,000-seat “Whirlwind Court” is the largest tennis court in Asia and the third largest worldwide. It resembles whirlwind, a revolving tennis ball, as well as a dazzling crown in appearance.
The stadium has completed construction and will be put into use during the coming 2015 Wuhan Open, which is scheduled to be held in Wuhan from September 25 to October 3.
It also boasts the largest retractable roof structure tennis venue in China. The ceiling of the whole stadium can be closed under extremely bad weather conditions in around 16 minutes. Such design also makes it suitable for other indoor sports events such as basketball and volleyball matches.
The “Whirlwind Court” will hold opening ceremony on September 27, and Li Na, the Wuhan-born two-time Grand Slam champion will attend the opening ceremony. Li will also guide the WTA players tour around Wuhan City during the Wuhan Open and help domestic and foreign fans get a better understanding of the capital city of central China’s Hubei Province.
